The holiday lights shine for more than three months from Thanksgiving all the way to late February, giving you plenty of chances to enjoy them without the holiday crowds. I’ll share my top 22 things to do in Leavenworth during the Winter season.
What to Do in Leavenworth During Winter: Outdoors
Leavenworth offers endless outdoor activities, from snowshoeing along quiet alpine trails to skiing, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, and more. It was especially festive to visit during Christmastime as we did last year.
1. Stroll Through the Village of Lights
The town comes alive with over half a million twinkling lights starting on Thanksgiving and lasting until the last day of February. Every corner of Leavenworth’s Front Street drips with sparkling lights and decor, and carolers fill the air with classic Christmas tunes as they perform in the Gazebo.
2. Visit the Reindeer Farm

The Leavenworth Reindeer Farm offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with these magical creatures. Open year-round (closed in March), the farm is especially enchanting in winter when the reindeer are in their element.
The highlight of my visit was the chance to feed the reindeer. Standing in the enclosure, surrounded by these gentle creatures and feeling their soft noses as they eat from your hand is a truly magical experience.

Buckle up for a one-of-a-kind ride on Washington’s first alpine coaster that reminds of those found in the Alps, where you’ll twist and turn down a scenic mountainside with views of the Wenatchee River Valley all around you. Riders control their own speed, making it a fun thrill for both adrenaline seekers and those who just want to soak up the scenery.

9. Hit the Slopes at Nearby Ski Resorts
Leavenworth serves as an excellent base camp for Winter sports enthusiasts, with world-class ski resorts just a short drive away.
Stevens Pass has 37 major runs spread across 1,125 acres of skiable terrain and is about 35 minutes from Leavenworth. The resort is known for its excellent powder, thanks to an average snowfall of 460 inches. The varied terrain ranges from gentle slopes for beginners to challenging backcountry terrain for experts.
Mission Ridge offers a different experience, with drier snow and sunnier conditions, and is slightly farther away. This resort sits on the east side of the Cascades, which means it often enjoys clear skies even when other areas are cloudy. Mission Ridge provides plenty of challenging runs for all levels with 2,000 acres of skiable terrain and a 2,250-foot vertical drop.
Both resorts offer night skiing, allowing you to enjoy Leavenworth during the day and then ski after you have explored the town. They also have excellent ski schools for beginners.
10. Explore Waterfront Park
The snow-covered trails along the Wenatchee River offer peaceful Winter walks and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, which often winter in the area.

Bring a pair of binoculars as they’ll enhance your wildlife viewing experience. Also, the paths can be icy, so dress warmly in layers, wear sturdy, waterproof boots and consider bringing trekking poles.

The Winter months in Leavenworth WA are cold and snowy, with daytime highs typically ranging from the low 30s to low 40s°F (−1 to 7 °C). Nights can be much colder, often dipping into the teens and 20s °F (−7 to −2 °C). When you’re ready to warm up, you can take a break from the chilly outdoors and enjoy cozy indoor activities like wine tasting, festive shopping or savoring hearty Bavarian meals.
11. Shop on Front Street and the Obertal Mall
There are plenty of shops to explore along Front Street and in the Obertal Mall. A few of my favorite shops are:

For a quirky indoor activity that’s perfect for escaping the cold, head to the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. This unique attraction houses over 7,000 nutcrackers from more than 50 countries and was one of the places that I was looking forward to the most. I really enjoyed seeing all the different kinds of Nutcrackers, from traditional wooden soldiers to Disney to modern pop culture figures, and the huge Nutcrackers taller than I am. Don’t miss the gift shop on your way out. It’s a great place to pick up a unique souvenir or even start your own nutcracker collection.
Museum hours are 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Saturday and 11:00 am – 4:30 pm on Sunday. Admission is only $5.00 per adult, Seniors over the age of 65 are $3.50, Youth aged 6-16 are $2.00, and children 5 years old and younger are free.

With its high wooden-beamed ceilings and large windows, it provides a charming setting for any performance and you may be lucky enough to catch a performance of “The Nutcracker” during your visit.

The Alpine Spa at Icicle Village Resort provides a cozy mountain retreat with massages and facials designed for total relaxation. Many local hotels and resorts offer spa services, but this one is highly rated.
One of the most unique experiences at Alpine Spa is their outdoor hot tub. There’s something magical about soaking in warm, bubbling water while snow falls gently around you.

Leavenworth’s Bavarian theme also extends to its culinary scene, making Winter the perfect time to indulge in hearty German fare. After a day of outdoor activities, warming up with a plate of schnitzel or piping hot fondue hits the spot.

Step inside Leavenworth’s storybook bakery, The Gingerbread Factory, where the scent of warm gingerbread fills the air and whimsical treats line the shelves. The taste of their spiced gingerbread cookies and peppermint chocolate cupcakes was so good that I went two days in a row.

Nothing says Bavarian comfort quite like a warm pretzel and a bratwurst. At downtown favorites like these two outdoor beer gardens München Haus and the Leavenworth Sausage Garden across the street, you can dig into classic German flavors paired with local craft beer.
Warm up by the fire pit or heat lamp with a freshly baked pretzel in one hand and a juicy bratwurst in the other as you marvel at the many varieties of sausages roasting on the grill at München Haus or marvel at the condiment bar at the Leavenworth Sausage Garden. We sampled both during our visit, and I particularly enjoyed the pretzels and ambiance by the fire pit at München Haus. However, the raspberry and mustard condiments at the Leavenworth Sausage Garden were also delicious. I would also like to point out that the Sausage Garden is a part of Visconti’s Italian Restaurant.

Step downstairs into Andreas Keller and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported straight to Germany. With hearty plates of schnitzel and spaetzle, frothy steins of beer and live accordion music filling the room, this longtime Leavenworth favorite delivers authentic Bavarian charm in every bite.
Upstairs, Mozart’s brings a touch of elegance to Leavenworth’s Bavarian dining scene, serving up traditional German dishes and wonderfully cheesy fondue alongside decadent desserts like Black Forest cake. I also loved viewing the Village of Lights from the upstairs balcony during dinner.
Pro Tip: Make a reservation as both of these restaurants book up fast, especially on busy holiday weekends.
19. Grab a Caffeine Pick-Me-Up or Sweet Treat at Little Red’s

No stroll through Front Street is complete without great coffee or peppermint cocoa. Wrapping my hands around the warm mug with a fun message that reads “I’m full of Holiday Spirit. It’s called Coffee.” was the perfect way to recharge before heading back out into the snow.

My secret to enjoying all the snowy fun in Leavenworth is layering smartly.
Here’s what worked best for me:
