Looking for a laid-back coastal escape? Cambria, California, along Highway 1, is the Central Coast’s quiet gem and is often overlooked in favor of Big Sur’s famous coastline to the north. It draws you in, slowing your pace until you realize you’re breathing deeper and wondering why you didn’t come sooner.

When my family and I visited Cambria in December, nothing prepared me for the awe of seeing the elephant seals up close. Photos don’t do justice to how humongous the males are, or how special it feels to witness a newborn pup being born right before your eyes. It’s the kind of moment that turns a simple stop into a memorable trip.

Then I realized there’s so much to explore in this area, from a peaceful morning walk along the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk to warming up with the best meals, popping in and out of shops in town without an agenda, and touring the opulent Hearst Castle. If you’re ready to experience that slower allure for yourself, here are my favorite things to do in and near Cambria, from wildlife encounters to lovely nature walks and delicious local food.

Things to do in Cambria

1) Stroll through the town of Cambria

📍Main St., Cambria

Cambria’s charm shines when you wander without an agenda. The Cambria East Village and Main Street are filled with small shops, galleries and cozy storefronts that draw you in. My favorites were The Garden Shed for garden finds, Fermentations Wine Bar for local tastings and Lily’s Coffee House for the best coffee or a relaxed breakfast on the sunny patio.

2) Moonstone Beach Boardwalk

📍6650 Moonstone Beach Dr., Cambria

Popular among locals and visitors alike, this flat boardwalk winds a mile along the bluff above the Pacific. It’s an excellent spot for a relaxing stroll, watching the waves or sea otters play offshore, and for a spectacular sunset year-round.

The boardwalk is also wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy the breathtaking views.

3) Tidepooling at Leffingwell Landing

📍6900 Moonstone Beach Dr., Cambria

At the north end of Moonstone Beach, Leffingwell Landing reveals a world of sea stars, anemones and tiny crabs during low tide. It’s a peaceful spot to explore the coastline up close.

Pro Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and check the tide chart before you go so you can enjoy it at low tide.

When you’re ready to stretch your legs, Fiscalini Ranch Preserve offers gentle trails that overlook the Pacific. Keep an eye out for deer, hawks, and you might even be lucky enough to catch migrating whales.

📍2277 Main St., Cambria

You can’t visit Cambria without dining at Linn’s Restaurant. Their chicken pot pie is famous for its flaky crust, and the olallieberry pie is legendary for its sweet, but not too sweet, buttery perfection and the perfect ratio of berries. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Pro Tip: If the restaurant is busy, try Linn’s Easy as Pie Café just down the alley for quicker service and outdoor seating.

12) Watch the Elephant Seals at the Piedras Blancas Rookery

📍Highway 1 (Cabrillo Highway), San Simeon for the Rookery

Just north of town, the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery is one of California’s most awe-inspiring natural scenes. There is always a year-round population of Elephant Seals. Still, in winter, massive males weighing up to 5,000 pounds posture on the beach, creating a dramatic contrast with the vulnerable newborn pups being nurtured nearby by their attentive mothers. This juxtaposition of size and innocence makes for a powerful viewing experience.

This was one of my favorite stops, as I had never seen Elephant Seals so humongous before, and I really enjoyed seeing the babies being born. I walked up and down the boardwalk for over an hour, watching the males charge each other while the females cared for their young and flicked sand on themselves.

📍250 San Simeon Ave, Suite 5A, San Simeon for the Friends of the Elephant Seal Visitor Center

The Friends of the Elephant Seal Visitor Center is worth stopping by to learn all about the Elephant Seals, especially if you have children. I certainly learned some fun facts about the animals I didn’t know before. They are open 10 am – 4 pm daily.

Pro Tip: Visit from December through February for pupping season. Bring a warm jacket as it is very windy.

The Piedras Blancas Light Station is a 19th-century lighthouse with sweeping ocean views. Guided tours reveal maritime stories, shipwrecks and coastal wildlife.

14) Take a Hearst Castle Tour (and spot the Zebras!)

📍750 Hearst Castle Rd., San Simeon

A short 14-minute drive from Cambria leads to the world-famous Hearst Castle, where art, architecture and history meet.

I’ve visited Hearst Castle in the summer, and the grounds are absolutely stunning in the sunshine with several fascinating tours to choose from and endless views of the coast. However, my absolute favorite time to go is during the holidays, when the Christmas Sunset Tour turns the estate into pure magic. Watching the sun dip behind the famous Neptune Pool while the grand rooms glow with 1930s Christmas décor is unforgettable and wildly beautiful.

Pro Tip: Book your tour early, as they fill up fast.

Don’t miss: Look for zebras grazing along Highway 1, which are descendants of Hearst’s private zoo!

Tour the lavender fields, sample local honey and browse handmade soaps and candles. It’s peaceful, photogenic and smells divine.

While the farm offers tours year-round, the lavender typically blooms from late May through the end of June. Make sure to book your tour in advance.

📍1457 Willow Road, Nipomo

Open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, the Luffa Farm offers guided tours that reveal how natural luffas are grown and harvested (spoiler: they come from plants, not the sea!). It’s quirky, educational and a great place to pick up unique handmade gifts.

19) Morro Bay

📍T Pier at 1185 Embarcadero, Morro Bay

You can also stroll along the pier to get the best views of the Morro Bay rock and grab lunch or dinner. There are a lot of choices for fresh fish. Giovanni’s Fish Market & Galley is the oldest seafood spot on the waterfront and one of the best places for crispy fish and chips or a buttery lobster roll with a view of the bay.

23) Eat at the Madonna Inn’s Copper Cafe

📍100 Madonna Road, San Luis Obispo

Stop at the iconic Madonna Inn for all-day breakfast, lunch or dessert, where everything from the pink walls to the over-the-top cakes is fun. I went at Christmastime and enjoyed the Inn all decked out with Christmas decor. You may want to either go early in the day or make a reservation online, as it tends to fill up fast on popular weekends.
