Christmas in Sacramento is full of nostalgic cheer, and I’m enjoying every bit of the twinkle lights lining historic neighborhoods, festive markets popping up across the city, and cozy traditions that make December feel especially heartwarming. My holiday season always begins with a delicious hot chocolate from Ginger Elizabeth’s before wandering through the Fabulous 40s lights and it sets the tone for a month of joyful, meaningful moments.
What I love most is the variety of Christmas things to do in Sacramento for every traveler—light displays, holiday teas, ice skating, Christmas trains, nativities, and day trips to Folsom, Roseville, Apple Hill, Grass Valley, and Nevada City. The region makes celebration easy at your own pace.
This guide gathers the best Sacramento Christmas events, lights, holiday markets, photo spots, nativities, and nearby day trips into one place so you can plan seasonal outings that feel joyful, meaningful, and easy. Whether you’re planning one magical weekend or a month of merriment, this guide promises to enhance your holiday spirit and make the season unforgettable.
Best Things to Do at Christmastime in Sacramento
1) Christmas Tree Lighting at the State Capitol
📍1315 10th St, Sacramento
The Christmas tree lighting at the California State Capitol is one of Sacramento’s great holiday traditions. As the lights glow against the historic dome and families gather, the whole evening feels nostalgic. Just be sure to check the weather beforehand as the ceremony has been moved indoors on rainy year, which change the vibe.

2) Holiday Home Tour in East Sac
📍Multiple addresses in East Sacramento
The East Sac Holiday Home Tour (also known as the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour) is a Sacramento tradition. Beautifully decorated homes open for tours the first weekend in December. The houses look like they belong in a magazine, so it’s fun to stroll through for décor inspiration while soaking in the holiday charm. My favorite part is that it benefits Sacred Heart Parish School.
3) Lighted Boat Parade on the Sacramento Waterfront
📍1000 Front Street, Sacramento
Hot cocoa in hand, we cheered on boats decked in twinkling lights as they sailed the river. The loud sound of boat horns echoing into the night added a harmonic layer to the festive carols playing from the decorated vessels. My husband and I watched from the Delta King at the Old Sac waterfront. Dine there, then watch the parade. I especially loved each boat’s theme, waving and wishing each a Merry Christmas as it glided by. The parade is typically held on the first Saturday evening in December, after dark.
Pro Tip: Arrive early for a good viewing spot and bundle up as river nights get chilly fast.

4) Theatre of Lights at Old Sacramento
📍K St, Old Sacramento Waterfront
Old Sacramento turns into a storybook during the holidays. The Theatre of Lights has two shows each weekend night and shuts down part of K St. to retell ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas through lights, narration and glowing effects across the historic buildings. It was exciting to see, and the best spot for viewing is standing in the middle of the street, with views of the action on both buildings, but it’s primarily geared towards kids. I like to pair it with dinner at the festive Firehouse Restaurant or aboard the Delta King on the waterfront for a memorable night out.

5) Chriskindlmarkt Sacramento
📍3349 J Street, Sacramento
I thoroughly enjoyed this German-inspired Christmas market, held the first weekend in December. I loved listening to the traditional German Christmas carols and watching the dancers while sipping Gluwein. They even had Gluwein in a take-home mug, just like in Germany. I ate authentic Nurnberg sausage with potato salad, browsed the booths, and met St. Nikolaus and Christkind for a photo. No need to stress about getting tickets ahead of time, as we got ours at the door for just $5 per person.

6) Imaginarium Light Festival at Cal Expo
📍1600 Exposition Blvd, Sacramento
The Imaginarium Light Festival is one of Northern California’s most immersive holiday light shows, with colorful tunnels, themed displays, giant lanterns, and endless photo ops.

7) Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink
📍701 K Street, Sacramento
Skating under city lights is a classic December tradition. The downtown rink, steps from the Golden One Center, is ideal for date night or family outings—especially paired with holiday shopping in Old Sac or nearby dinner.
8) Sacramento Ballet’s Nutcracker
📍1301 L Street, Sacramento
The Nutcracker is a beloved Christmas tradition. Beautiful choreography, stunning costumes, and timeless music make it special. I’ve gone most years with my daughter since she was 5, and now she’s grown, making it a magical evening, especially when we pair it with a festive downtown dinner. One of my daughter’s favorite moments is during the snowflake scene; she often whispers how the flurrying dancers look like a gentle snowfall on stage. It’s these shared magical moments that make the tradition truly unforgettable.

9) Whimsical Christmas River Fox Train
📍18095 County Road 117, West Sacramento
Hop aboard the Magical Christmas train for a joyful holiday outing filled with lights, music and cheerful characters. It’s festive, nostalgic and great for families.
Things to Do at Christmastime Beyond Sacramento
10) Duarte Poinsettia Nursery
📍1555 Baldwin Rd, Hughson
Visiting Duarte Poinsettias, located just south of Modesto in Hughson, felt like a dream come true. Warm greenhouses are filled with rows and rows of vibrant poinsettias in every color imaginable: classic reds, blush pinks, and creamy whites. It’s the kind of holiday stop that instantly boosts your festive mood. It’s almost impossible to leave with just one plant. I know that I didn’t, but I was a happy customer!

11) Christmas Store + Ice Skating in Historic Folsom
📍Leidesdorff St & Sutter St, Folsom
For small-town charm, head to historic Folsom. My family loves browsing antique shops and boutiques before skating at the outdoor rink. My favorite shop is Dorothea’s Shoppe, a year-round Christmas store with unique ornaments.

12) Cut your Own Christmas Tree + Seasonal Delights
📍Apple Hill, Placerville
Cutting your own Christmas tree is one of the best Apple Hill holiday traditions. Farms like Harris Family Farm, Hacienda Orchards, Indian Rock Tree Farm, Madrone Tree Hill, McGee Christmas Tree Farm, and Roberts Tree Farm offer classic choose-and-cut fun as well as plenty of pre-cut options. You’ll find popular varieties: Noble Fir, Douglas Fir, White Fir, and Silvertip. Most spots provide saws and twine. Some require reservations or entry tickets, especially on weekends, so always check the Apple Growers Association website for the latest hours and rules before you go.
My favorite treat is the hot chocolate flight at Grandpa’s Cellar (open until December 1st). I couldn’t decide which sip was best—S’more, Cinnamon, Coconut, or Peppermint. I enjoyed all of it beneath the fall-colored trees.
If you visit in December, Boa Vista Orchards has tasty apple cider donuts and apple cider to wash them down.

13) Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley
📍Main & Mill Streets, Grass Valley
Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley is honestly one of my favorite holidays, with the downtown dripping in glowing lights. You’ll find local vendors, cozy treats, live music and carolers, plus lots of photo-worthy corners as you wander. It’s free, super family-friendly and happens on select Friday nights between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

14) Victorian Christmas in Nevada City
📍Broad St, Main St & Union St, Nevada City
Victorian Christmas in Nevada City feels like stepping straight into a classic Christmas storybook. The historic Gold Rush streets glow with twinkle lights and garlands. Carolers in period costumes wander past cozy shops, mulled cider stands, and artisan booths. With the chill of the mountain air, it’s nice to warm your hands on a hot drink and listen to live holiday music while browsing local handmade gifts. The entire downtown transforms into a festive, old-fashioned Christmas village.
15) Festive Mini-Golf
📍1893 Taylor Rd, Roseville
My family and I enjoy a festive round of mini golf under the festive lights and Christmas decor with jolly Christmas music playing in the background. It’s an easy, family-friendly way to add a little friendly competition to your night.

Pacific Street Café is even cozier around the holidays, especially with its classic train-themed vibe and the little train that circles the restaurant’s ceiling.
