There’s something unmistakably festive and magical about wandering through the Cambria Christmas Market on a cool December night and even more cheery about staying at the Cambria Pines Lodge and seeing the glowing lights from your room. I had never seen over 30 million lights shining so brightly in one place. Within seconds, we were enveloped in a twinkling world of tunnels, towering displays and festive music. Even my adult kids’ faces lit up with joy, fascinated by the vibrant colors and the whimsical-themed areas that seemed like magic come to life.

Earlier that evening, we’d checked into the lodge and enjoyed our room overlooking the lights, turned on our fireplace and enjoyed our cozy room. But the real highlight was stepping directly into the Christmas Market after dark and letting the magic unfold at our own pace. I spent three nights visiting the Cambria Christmas Market and saw something different every time.

If you’re dreaming of a holiday getaway on California’s Central Coast, complete with festive lights, whimsical displays, German-inspired food, artisan shopping, and the charm of a small coastal town, the Cambria Christmas Market is one of the most jovial ways to celebrate the season. In this guide, I’ll share what to expect, insider tips to help you save time and how to make the most of your visit.

What is the Cambria Christmas Market?

The Cambria Christmas Market is a beloved Central Coast holiday tradition since 2011, inspired by Germany’s classic Christkindlmarkts. Each year, the grounds at the Cambria Pines Lodge and the neighboring Cambria Nursery transform into a festive wonderland filled with handmade gifts from Germany, over 3,000 lights, photo opportunities around every corner, warm treats and cozy holiday ambiance. My family and I, including my adult kiddos, had a wonderful time visiting on a long weekend in December and enjoyed wandering through the festive light displays.

📍Location: 2905 Burton Dr., Cambria, CA

📆 When? Event runs most days from the day after Thanksgiving to December 31st (check the website for closures)

💡In January 2026, the lights (no market, Santa, or vendors) have been extended through January 18th if you book directly with the Cambria Pines Lodge. This is a great chance to see the lights without the crowds!

Time: 5:00 pm- 9:00 pm

💰Ticket Amount: Ticket prices vary depending on the date, time and whether you visit on a weekday or weekend. Check the calendar online as prices are usually higher closer to Christmas, so booking early can save money. Bundling Market tickets with a stay at the Cambria Pines Lodge or sister property can be a great way to go.

What to Expect at the Largest Christmas Market on the West Coast

The Cambria Christmas Market stands out with several top rankings, like ranking #4 on America’s Most Popular Christmas Markets by Winna and being named a runner-up in USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Holiday Market in 2024.

I love that it’s a charming blend of European tradition with a West Coast twist.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Vendor stalls with hand-blown and hand-painted ornaments from Germany, which was one of my favorite finds because these handmade details made wandering the market fun and I got to take home a wonderful keepsake
  • Vendor stalls with beautifully handcrafted Santas and Nutcrackers from Germany
  • Mouth-watering Bratwurst and humongous Pretzels
  • Delicious warm drinks like Glühwein, apple cider and hot chocolate served in this year’s signature collectible mug (just like the traditional German Christmas markets- 2025’s mug is in the cutest heart-shaped mug)

  • Yummy treats such as German specialties like Lebkuchen (gingerbread hearts) and roasted nuts
  • Artisan crafts, home decor and plants at the Cowboy Christmas Market at the Cambria Nursery
  • Live music at several spots throughout the market
  • Santa visits on most nights through December 23rd from 5-8:30pm
  • Miniature train rides
  • Upper Market with a Biergarten, lots of food choices and vendors
  • Whimsical displays, themed areas, tons of photo opportunities, like in the snow globe and light tunnel
  • Over 30,000 lights sparkle across roughly six acres- and my favorite part is that they’re glowing everywhere you look: through tunnels, across rooftops, up hillside displays and along themed paths
  • Much More

Where does the Cambria Christmas Market take place?

One of the best parts is that the market sits directly on the grounds of the Cambria Pines Lodge and across the street at the Cambria Nursery. We got to see the lights from our room, and since we stayed at the Cambria Pines Lodge, our package included tickets to the Christmas Market and breakfast.

The Cambria Pines Lodge and Christmas Market is also dog-friendly for well-behaved, leashed pups. We seriously considered bringing our dogs, but ultimately decided against it at the last minute because our puppy is still learning and with the crowds, we worried she might feel a bit overwhelmed.

How to get to the Cambria Christmas Market?

Cambria is located roughly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles in California. It will take about 3.5 hours to drive there from each location, and about 5 hours to drive to Cambria from Sacramento and San Diego.

🚗 Getting to the Cambria Christmas Market at the Cambria Pines Lodge is easy from a few major routes.

  • Most visitors arrive via Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) or US-101, then connect to CA-46 West or CA-41 to reach the Cambria coast.
  • If you’re already on Highway 1 in Cambria (Main Street), you can take the Burton Drive turnoff and follow it straight up to Cambria Pines. You’ll see the lights on the left side of the street as you approach the Cambria Pines Lodge.

Staying at the Cambria Pines Lodge (My honest experience)

If you’re looking for the most seamless, relaxing holiday getaway, staying onsite at the Cambria Pines Lodge is the way to go. Walking from our room straight into the Christmas Market made the whole trip feel effortless. Plus, the complimentary breakfast worked great for our group.

I stayed at the Cambria Pines Lodge with my family and loved how easy it made the entire trip. I share the pros, room tips and why it works so well for market nights in my Cambria Pines Lodge review.

Tips for Visiting the Cambria Christmas Market

  • Book your tickets online early, as prime weekends do tend to sell out. As this event is popular, tickets usually sell out and tickets at the door are not guaranteed. If available, walk-up tickets cost about $10 more. If you book with the Cambria Pines Lodge, J. Patrick House & Inn or the Sea Otter Inn, then you can bundle Christmas Market tickets with your stay
  • Visit Monday-Thursday to avoid crowds, arrive right at opening, or go later in the evening, or visit after Christmas for a quieter experience
  • Evenings can be chilly, so wear layers, comfortable shoes, a warm jacket, a beanie or scarf and gloves
  • The best time for photo opportunities with fewer crowds is the first hour after opening or the last hour before closing
  • You can view the Whimsical Winter Christmas displays, home decor and garden gift shop at the Cambria Nursery during the day from 9:00 am- 5:00 pm for fewer crowds. It is also open during the Christmas Market
  • Mobility note: The market is wheelchair accessible, with lots of paved paths and ADA parking, but be aware that some paths are hilly
  • Pro Tip: Download the Cambria Christmas Market App, as it will give you all kinds of information and a map of the festivities

Is the Cambria Christmas Market Worth It?

Absolutely! The lights are breathtaking, the atmosphere is festive, and the market has many traditional German touches like food, handmade ornaments, nutcrackers, Santas, and a collectible mug to sip Glühwein, apple cider, or hot chocolate in. There was so much attention to detail that I went three nights in a row and saw something different every time.

I have gone to a few Zoo Lights experiences over the years, but nothing is quite like this experience. It’s magical to walk down the paths and be enveloped entirely in lights everywhere you look. I was also awe-struck by some of the mechanical displays and their themed vignettes were so whimsical. I won’t give away all the details, but I acted like a big kid, singing along to the music and skipping down the pathway at certain points. If you were in a bah humbug mood before you came, you left feeling joyful!

Things to Do In and Near Cambria

The Cambria Coast is an exciting place with many things to do and see. We went for a walk on the Moonstone Beach boardwalk and ate a slice of the famous chicken pot pie and an Olallieberry pie. Besides seeing the lights at the Cambria Christmas Market, our highlight was watching a baby elephant seal being born at the Elephant Seal Rookery. These spots make for the perfect winter getaway.

🎄 Don’t Miss This Nearby Holiday Gem: Hearst Castle at Christmas

If you’re in Cambria for a few days, this nearby experience, just 14 minutes up the road, is absolutely worth the short drive. Hearst Castle at Christmas transforms with glowing trees, vintage décor and a festive atmosphere that feels straight out of a classic holiday film.

🦭 A visit to the Cambria Christmas Market is often what brings travelers to town in winter, but it’s just the beginning of what makes this area so special. Beyond the lights and mulled wine, there are so many memorable things to do in Cambria and nearby hidden gems, from coastal walks to wildlife encounters and charming stops that are worth adding to your itinerary.
