While most people think of the wildflower super blooms, those of us who love seasonal road trips know there’s another spring spectacle hiding in plain sight. The first time I drove through the almond orchards near Modesto during bloom season, I had to pull over more than once to take it all in and I keep returning year after year to experience the beauty.
I love visiting the almond blossoms in Modesto, specifically because they are the most accessible orchards and the closest to the Sacramento and Bay Area. Row after row of almond trees bloom almost overnight, turning farmland into what feels like a Monet watercolor painting stretching for miles.

The farmland surrounding Modesto bursts into white, fluffy, cloud-like blooms with one of California’s most beautiful seasonal displays of almond blossoms each spring. After a few visits, I discovered something that made exploring the area even easier: the Almond Blossom Cruise app. Once I downloaded it, following the route became effortless.
The Almond Blossom Cruise App is like having your own private tour guide in your car with you. The app guides you on a driving route through scenic almond orchards, farmland, historic covered bridges and local foodie stops throughout Stanislaus County.
You download the app to your phone to access the tour for a small fee, making it easy to navigate blossom-lined country roads, discover hidden gems, the best almond orchards that you can walk through, the perfect stops at local farms and shops and explore historic landmarks.
My favorite part about this is that you don’t need to plan your route out ahead of time as the app will talk you through where to go and what you’re looking at, so you are more relaxed and can enjoy the day.

The Modesto Almond Blossom Cruise follows a scenic loop of roughly 60-70 miles, depending on which route you take and how many stops you make along the way.

What makes this drive so special isn’t just the blossoms themselves, but also the experience of slowing down and enjoying the countryside. It’s a peaceful alternative to flower festivals because the route takes you to lesser-known treasures as well as fan favorites, but everyone is spread out at various locations.

Timing is everything when planning a trip to see the almond blossoms in Modesto. Unlike some spring flowers that bloom for weeks, almond blossoms have a short, but spectacular season, which makes catching them at their peak feel extra special!

Almond blossom season in Modesto typically runs from mid-February through early March, depending on weather conditions.

Weather plays a big role in determining exactly when the blossoms appear each year. Bloom timing varies each year slightly based on winter temperatures and rainfall.

There are two beautiful visual stages of almond blossom season. First, the orchard trees are covered in delicate white blooms. Then, when the wind starts to blow, the petals drift from the branches and swirl through the air, landing on the ground, which locals call “California Snow,” and is my favorite part of the season.

One of my favorite parts about exploring the Modesto Almond Blossoms is how easy it is to turn it into a relaxed spring road trip. There are a few ways to experience it.

After driving the blossom trail a few times, I found that downloading the Almond Blossom Cruise App made the experience much smoother for me.
The app made it incredibly easy to follow the route without worrying about missing turns. It guided us along scenic roads and helped us discover some of the most photogenic orchards along the trail. Instead of constantly checking maps, we could simply enjoy the drive.
Using the Official Blossom Cruise Map
Another option is to follow the official Modesto Almond Bloom Cruise map, available at the Modesto Tourism Office, located at 2315 J St. in downtown Modesto, or at Rodin Farms. It outlines a scenic loop through the countryside.
Because the trail runs through working almond orchards, it’s important to remember that these are private farms. When stopping for photos:
- Stay on public roads
- Park safely on road shoulders
- Avoid entering private orchards (there are 3 orchard walks listed on the Almond Blossom Cruise, so there are plenty of photo opportunities)
Best Stops Along the Almond Blossom Cruise
One of my favorite things about driving the blossom cruise is that’s not just about the flowers. Along the route you’ll find farm stands, local foodie gems and unexpected hidden treasures that make the day even more fun.
Sciabica’s Olive Oil- Tasting Stop
📍2150 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto
A fun stop along the route is Sciabica’s California Olive Oil. Their tasting experience is a great way to sample locally produced award-winning olive oils that have been around for over 85 years and learn more about the region’s agriculture. They have so many different flavors that it was hard to choose which ones to take home.
Rodin Farms- Gorgeous Orchards & Farm Stand
📍5000 Oakdale Rd, Modesto
Rodin Farms is a wonderful stop along the trail, especially if you want to see beautiful almond orchards up close as you are able to walk through this orchard.
During blossom season, the white blooms create stunning views that look like the orchards were dusted with clouds resting on the branches.
Their farm stand is also a great place to browse local products and almond treats. I stocked up on ravioli to take home to make for dinner, a pie for dessert, strawberries and almonds.
Roberts Ferry Gourmet- Almond Butter Milkshakes & Orchard Walks
📍20493 Yosemite Blvd., Waterford
One stop I genuinely look forward to every year is Roberts Ferry Gourmet. There are 2 locations, one in Oakdale and one in Waterford. I like driving to the Waterford location because they offer a charming orchard walk.
Their almond butter milkshake is something I crave all year long. It’s rich, creamy and the perfect treat after a morning of chasing blossoms.
Oakdale Cheese & Specialties
📍10040 CA-120, Oakdale
If you’re traveling through Oakdale while exploring the blossoms, Oakdale Cheese & Specialties is a must. One of my favorite things to order here is their grilled cheese made with their award-winning Gouda. It’s simple, warm and great to enjoy by their koi pond.
Discover Two Covered Bridges

One of the most delightful surprises along the route is discovering not one, but two charming covered bridges tucked into the countryside.
Both Roberts Ferry and Knights Ferry Covered Bridges make fantastic photo stops. You can even take a history walk over the Tuolumne River at the Roberts Ferry Covered Bridge.
Best Spots to Eat Near the Almond Blossom Cruise
One of my favorite ways to turn a blossom drive into a full day adventure is by adding a few great local food stops.
- Mocha Magic Café and Bakeshop– An inviting stop to grab coffee, sandwiches or baked treats.
- Camp 4 Wine Café– a relaxed place for lunch or dinner with a cool Yosemite vibe. Their bruschetta and paninis are delicious.
- Oakdale Cheese & Specialties– Besides their cheese, their grilled cheese Gouda sandwich is mouth-watering.
Photography Tips for Almond Orchards
Here are my favorite tips for creating gorgeous photographs in the almond orchards.
- Shoot during early morning or golden hour for soft light
- Wear neutrals or pastels to complement the blossoms
- Use leading lines from the orchard rows
- Capture close-ups of blossom clusters for texture
- The symmetry of orchard rows creates stunning depth in photos, especially if you position yourself centered between the trees
- Look for the contrast of the blue sky against the white blooms
- Some fun and inexpensive props that add to your photo are a picnic blanket, a wicker picnic basket and a lace parasol (of course, you don’t need any of this to take stunning photos, but it adds some whimsy to your photos)

Final Thoughts On Why The Almond Blossom Cruise Is Worth The Drive
If you love scenic drives, historic small towns, gorgeous orchards, unique local food stops, and endless photography opportunities as I do, then yes, it’s absolutely worth the drive. It’s only a 1.5-hr drive from San Francisco and Sacramento, and a wonderful way to experience a fleeting moment.
What I love most about the almond blossom cruise is that it takes you to many hidden gems that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. I wasn’t rushing through an itinerary. If an orchard was super busy, like Rodin Farms can be sometimes, I meandered to a different part of the orchard and took my photos, then continued on the Almond Blossom Cruise to discover more orchards and beautiful scenery.
